644
by Anthony
Last week, I didn’t write a lot as I wanted to show you a few images dedicated to transform our point of view in the use of cars in our actual society and where it may bring us if we don’t change our mindset.
Maybe, I have a perfect exemple of where we shouldn’t go and why it is important to reshape our views of our society with this number : 644.
Netherlands is a rather small country : 41,850 km2 but highly densified : almost 18 millions inhabitants, that’s about 432 inhabitants par square kilometer. (France : 672,051 km2, 68 millions inhabitants, 107 inhabitants / km2).
I found in that study from Pwc (in fact through this article in English, I’m pretty bad at Dutch…) that to meet the Netherlands goal to sell only free-emission cars by 2030, the country will need to add 644 charging points PER DAY until 2030.
In order to regularly charge 1.9 million passenger cars, 1.5 million new charging points must be realized in the period 2021 to 2029, in accordance with the National Charging Infrastructure Agenda (NAL). At the end of 2020, there were 230,000 (…).
This implies that an average of 644 new charging points will have to be installed per working day in the next nine years (compared to 105 per working day in the past four years).
The study shows us a pretty optimistic view of the feasibility of the project : yes, the Netherlands will add 1,5 million new charging points in the next 7 years.
That’s one charging point for 10 inhabitants. Ok. What about the need of energy ? Will the grid be strong enough to handle so much power ? What about the emissions of the electricity production ? If it comes from coal or gas, can we really tell it’s emission free ?
It means that if we really want emission free vehicles, we need to power up renewables as long as we need to develop charging stations, etc, etc…
But, as you’ve read my previous article, you know that maybe there is another way : stop thinking car and try other ways to move, or maybe even think about the need to move… I let you think about it and count till 644…
